CONNECTING IS NOT THE SAME AS CONFORMING. At EMA we come in all kinds of variety and each one of us brings something wonderful to the party. Our diversity is our strength when we all live with shared values and hopes.
DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH
Can
anyone think of something you are thankful for? Canada is an awesome
country because we have so many wonderful types of people. Some people
are very tall, others not so much. Some of us have dark skin, and some
of us have light skin. Some people can speak other languages. Point out
to students that there are types of hair colour/styles and lengths. We
all came here in different kinds of cars or trucks. Some of us have big
feet and some of us have tiny feet. (*even though we look different we
are all a part of the same team and everyone is important, just the way
they are.
Question 1: Is there anyone here who can speak another language?
Question 2: Can you say Merry
Christmas in another language (it may sound the same, which is also funny)?
Have students learn to say Merry Christmas in another language.
FAMILY CHALLENGE
(can
be put on social media as a local challenge) – have a Zoom call with
another family with a different cultural heritage. Learn about their
different traditions, food, and fun activities. Do they celebrate
Christmas? What other holidays do they get to enjoy?
GOOD CITIZENS TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEAM MEMBERS!
This
week you could talk to your parents about how you can give back to kids
and families who are having a hard time this Christmas. (end of class)
REMINDER FOR PARENTS:
Giving
back is a great way to say thank you for all we have, a way to show
gratitude, a recognition that we have more than we need, in a world
where some kids have much less.
FAMILY CHALLENGE
Challenge
students and parents to find a Christmas present that they can share
that doesn’t cost any money. Perhaps it’s an activity invitation via
Zoom or a plate of baking or a toy for a neighbourhood child.
