Why EMA?

how it
started

In 2015 a few talented and passionate martial artists formed a team and created what is known as Excel Martial Arts. We drew from Western and Eastern philosophies. We flipped the traditional paradigm of martial arts and created something for today's society! We incorporate traditional martial arts with the latest in exercise science and pedagogy to offer a system accessible to everyone, of any age, from all walks of life.

what is
EXCEL MARTIAL ARTS

•   A safe and encouraging environment for children to build friendships and positive relationships.
•   A group of role models for your children to learn social skills, manners, and other life skills.
•   The best after school activity for developing coordination and motor skills.
•   Practical self defence for real world obstacles. While this is an enjoyable pursuit, you are also learning an incredibly effective reality-based martial arts system.
•   A community of like-minded individuals focused on turning you or your children into the best version of themselves.
•   Open and accepting of everyone!

our
history

Each founding member of EMA bring with them many unique talents and skills which helped make EMA what it is today – a well rounded martial art, that also includes exercise, fitness, lifestyle management, life coaching, child development, community, friendships, discipline development, and CHALLENGE. What CHALLENGES YOU, CHANGES YOU. We challenge ourselves every day to be better, and we take this mindset to the training mats. We have decades of martial arts experience on our team, a Kinesiologist, a Chiropractor, a Clinical Counsellor, and a wealth of experience and knowledge in building relationships with schools and the community.

what we
teach

•   Traditional martial arts – punching, kicking, breakfalls (how to fall safely), gymnastics, stances, stand-up fighting (point sparring), ground fighting (grappling), self-defence (we developed our own system based on science and the human response to fear/danger), the manners and etiquette of martial arts.
•   Fitness – all our classes incorporate the latest in exercise science – a proper dynamic warm-up, neuromuscular activation (agility ladder, footwork, athletic movement), priming exercise (drills on the technique/focus of the day), full body strengthening and conditioning, HIIT style cardio (high intensity interval training), strength work (bodyweight, kettlebell, pull-up bar, resistance bands and TRX), plus static stretching at the end of classes.
•   ReWired – EMA is proud to offer a mental health curriculum aimed at rewiring the ancestral circuits in our brain. Written by our Counsellor and Kinesiologist this monthly newsletter which contains “Mat Chats” for you, or your children cover such topics as nutrition, stretching, courage, kindness, peace, play, forgiveness, and community. The purpose of ReWired is to get our brains back to their most efficient state, instead of addicted to our phones, and social media which wreaks havoc on our mental health.
•   Forms – these are a series of marital arts movement, strung together to form a sequence of movements to simulate real-life action. These forms increase in difficulty and length as you progress through the ranks. They are an excellent form of fitness and will improve your cardio quickly!

about
ema

EMA is currently the largest Martial Arts franchise in British Columbia. We believe in making an impact in the community. The children, teens, and adults we train develop into happier and healthier human beings. They in turn take this greatness into their community. We collaborate with many schools in our local areas to offer fundraisers for PAC’s and teach martial arts to kids during lunch hour. We support an orphanage in the Philippines where we get our short-stick supply from and have had fundraisers for various charities and disasters. Finally, we offer movie nights to give parents a break, birthday parties, and fun events to our leaders who work extremely hard for us. If you or your children want to be a leader in EMA, we offer two levels of Instructor Academy, each a year long course covering everything from how to be a good leader and how to teach martial arts to anatomy, psychology, nutrition, stress management, coaching skills and more.
