“Has anyone said ‘I can’t do this’ to themselves when learning or practicing a new skill?”
Sometimes we get down on ourselves and think that we can’t do things, but with patience and hard work, great things can happen.
Has there been a time you've worked hard, were patient and stuck practicing or working even if you may have thought you couldn’t do it, and because of this were able to succeed.
• PERSEVERING means we don’t give up even when it’s hard.
• PERSISTENCE says, “I am not going to quit!”
• Kids who are PERSISTENT don’t get upset or discouraged when things aren’t going our way. EMA kids are tough and they don’t give up and they work hard when it is hard work.
• Anyone can succeed when it’s easy. It’s way more important to try hard when things are hard. Does anyone know what grit is?
• No matter what your goal, if you only have the energy for two or three attempts, don’t even bother. You aren’t going to reach your big goals unless you refuse to surrender.
• “Never give up! Never surrender!” (Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest)
• Success requires hundreds, or even thousands, of attempts.
• If you want to win you need to keep learning! The more you know the faster you will go! (ie: if you spend your time learning about martial arts you will get better, faster.
The same applies to almost everything).
• Thousands of kids start martial arts, but only a few become black belts. What do black belts have that other people don’t? (PERSISTENCE!
Giving up is easy but you will never reach your big goals.
• Hard work is not bad. Amazing things happen to people who work hard.
• Important stuff takes a lot of work.
• You can do almost anything if you work hard enough. It takes a lot of hard work to be a black belt but it’s worth it.
• Hard work makes good things happen. If you want to travel all over the world or have an awesome job someday or climb a mountain or become a pilot/doctor/martial arts instructor/teacher/police officer/firefigher etc. you are going to have to work hard.
Hard work challenge #1 (Show us your grit!): Cardio workout with success measured by effort. Instructors should acknowledge individual effort/enthusiasm/grit/best sweat/”beast mode”. This is not about going beyond limitations (next week), rather your goal is to work hard as a group, build teamwork and grit, and celebrate PERSEVERENCE
