Safety in the Home

Safety in the Home

Through martial arts training, self-defence in particular, you are safer out there in the world. But, did you know that most accidents, injuries and attacks occur IN THE HOME?

Creating a safe environment for children within the home is a paramount responsibility for parents, instructors and caregivers. The home, while often considered a sanctuary, can harbor various potential hazards that may pose risks to the well-being of children. From medications to kitchen appliances, it's essential to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring a secure living space. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore key aspects of child safety within the home, covering topics such as medication safety, food hazards, kitchen safety, electrical precautions, burglary and home invasion prevention, handling situations when a child is home alone, telephone safety, preventing slips and falls, avoiding choking hazards, and basic first aid.

MEDICATION SAFETY

Children are naturally curious, and it's not uncommon for them to explore their surroundings, including cabinets and
drawers where medications are stored. To prevent accidental poisoning or ingestion of harmful substances, it's crucial to:

  1. Childproof Medication Storage: Store all medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, in a locked cabinet or a high, out-of-reach location. Use child-resistant packaging whenever possible.
  2. Safe Disposal: Properly dispose of expired or unused medications to prevent accidental ingestion.

Teach children about the
dangers of taking medication without adult
supervision.

FOOD SAFETY / KITCHEN SAFETY

Children can be particularly vulnerable to certain foods, allergies, or choking hazards.
To ensure food safety at home:

  1. Allergen Awareness: Be aware of any food allergies your child may have, and carefully read ingredient labels.
  2. Choking Hazards: Avoid giving young children foods that pose a choking risk, such as whole grapes, hot dogs, or nuts. Encourage children to sit while eating and chew their food thoroughly.

The kitchen is filled with potential hazards, from hot surfaces to sharp objects. Here
are some safety measures to implement:

  1. Stove and Oven Safety: Use back burners whenever possible and turn pot handles inward to prevent accidental spills. Install stove guards to keep young children away from hot surfaces.
  2. Sharp Object Storage: Keep knives and other sharp objects in a secure, locked drawer or on high shelves.

ELECTRICAL PRECAUTIONS / HOME SECURITY / HOME ALONE

Electrical outlets and cords can be hazardous for young children. To prevent electrical accidents:

  1. Outlet Covers: Cover all accessible electrical outlets with childproof covers.
  2. Cord Management: Keep cords out of reach or use cord organizers to prevent tripping

A secure home is crucial for the safety of everyone inside. Consider these tips:

  1. Security Systems: Install a reliable home security system with alarms and surveillance cameras.
  2. Secure Doors and Windows: Reinforce entry points with sturdy locks and consider installing security film on windows.

When children are old enough to be home alone, establish clear guidelines for their safety:

  1. Emergency Procedures: Teach children how to respond in case of emergencies, including fire, medical issues, or home intrusion.
  2. Check-Ins: Establish a routine for regular check-ins, whether through phone calls or messages.

SAFETY FIRST

Creating a safe environment for children involves a combination of awareness, education, and proactive measures. By addressing potential hazards and implementing safety protocols, parents, instructors and caregivers can significantly
reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a secure and nurturing space for their children to grow and thrive. Regularly reviewing and updating safety measures will contribute to an ongoing commitment to child well-being within the home.

TRAINING CENTERS
There are risks in almost every work environment, and a martial arts school is no different. Ensure any dangerous training tools are safely stowed away. Teach the students they are not to play with weapons before or after class. They are for training purposes only. When carrying their training weapon, it should be held close to the body and not swung around other students. All the safety tips which apply to the home, also apply to the martial arts training centre.

  • The instructors at Excel Chilliwack are excellent. They are great with children, teens and adults. I've seen how much the kids just love their instructors. They are great role models - strict, but caring and loving. The training area is massive and allows plenty of space for training. Highly recommend.

  • My husband and I decided we wanted our girls in something that will teach them discipline, strength, and ways to defend themselves. After looking at a few other places we decided on Excel and it was the best choice ever. The teachers and student helpers are simply amazing and truly care about the children and helping them. We have found our forever home with Excel!

  • I would rate higher if i could. Amazing instructors that actually care about the kids achieving goals and succeeding. I have taken my child to other Karate classes before and it was basically let the kids run around for 30 minutes. Excel is totally different and my child loves going. Thank-you to Adam and his amazing team.
